Uncle Davy Gard Dead

Last week we announced the sudden and serious illness of Uncle Davy Gard, in Illinois, and that Mr. Lot Gard, his son, had gone to his bedside, to minister to the suffers wants and do what he could to relieve his aged parent. It is now our painful duty to announce the death of David Gard, which occurred near Quincy,Illinois, at 2 o'clock am, Monday Morning, July 4th, 1887.
For some years he has been a sufferer of Bright's kidney disease, which together with the long journey, was the cause of his death.
David Gard was born in Washington County, Ohio, July 6, 1815; hence at his death lacked two days of having reached the 72nd milestone of his life. In 1836 he was married to Miss Mary Cook, at Galena, Illinois. Mary preceded him in death, March 4th, 1886. Nine children were born to them, six of whom are still living.
Mr. Gard was one of the pioneers of Kansas-having located in Pottawatomie County in the year 1857. During these years he had known privation in it's bitterest form; had struggled and labored that a home might be made and called his own; and was only too proud in later years the goal had been reached, and he could rest from arduous labor, in comparative case. And of his family he was also proud. It was but two weeks prior to his demise that , in conversation, he said to us, "Old Davy has his faults, but he has a family of boys and girls, of which any man would be proud--not a dishonorable one among them." And he told the truth.
Though a member of no church organization, yet he was a charitable man and a just man--his word being as good as paper in any transaction.
The remains arrived at Wamego, Tuesday night last, and on Wednesday morning at 9o'clock, funeral services were held at the Jenkins school house, Rev. W.W. Kendall officiating, after which all that remained earthly of Uncle David Gard was forever consigned to rest. The body was placed beside that of his life partner in the Cook graveyard.
