Charles S. Davenhall, 93, of Harrisburg, PA died Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in Homeland Center. Charles was born May 7, 1917 in Old Forge, PA, the son of the late Charles H. and Nellie Stone Davenhall.
Charles proudly served in WWII, enlisting at the age of 26. A master sergeant with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, he was sent to Calcutta, India with The 691st Engineer Base Equipment Co., transporting heavy equipment for construction of the Burma Road. After the war, Bell Telephone Co. of Pa. employed him for 30 years. Following his retirement from Bell, he drove buses for Wolf and Capital Trailways. ("Best job I ever had!") In his suburban garage on Lenker Rd., he disassembled, rebuilt and restored a seemingly endless stream of cars, mostly Volkswagens, with painstaking exactitude. At the same time, he and Ruth were always ready and willing to help friends and neighbors with whatever difficulties they might face, mechanical, personal or otherwise.
Charles was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Callaway (2006), a son, Harvey C. (1974), and his brothers, Frederick (1981) and Robert (2007).
He is survived by sons, Thomas E. (Melissa) of Marietta, GA and Carl S. (Leisa) of Santa Fe, NM, and daughters, Joyce R. (Walter) O'Neal of Sherrill's Ford, NC and Doris R. (Joseph) Scheffey of Camp Hill, PA. His beloved grandchildren are Paul, Thomas, & Lydia Scheffey, and Hudson and Ryder Davenhall (Santa Fe, NM).
We greatly appreciate the love, respect and friendship the Homeland nurses and caregivers gave to Dad and us. We also want to thank Joe Lazenby for being a devoted lifelong friend to Charlie and our family.
Services will be held Monday, December 13, 2010, 11:30 a.m. at Neill Funeral Home, Paxtang, with his pastor, the Rev. John Green (Paxton Presbyterian) officiating. Visitation will precede the service at 10:30 a.m. Internment will follow in Paxtang Cemetery.
