Jeanette Watts Cartledge, 91, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010, after a lengthy period of declining health. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas M. and Agnes DuPre Watts. She attended Columbia High School and the University of South Carolina where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She was married for 69 years to Sam B. Cartledge Jr. of Batesburg until his passing in August 2009.

An avid bridge player, crossword puzzler and reader for years, Jeanette was most noted for the number and variety of beautiful plants and shrubs in her large yard and gardens. She was also known for her generosity in sharing plantings and cuttings of the numerous special plants she had grown.

A charter member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, she sang in the church choir for many years with her husband. She was employed by several Columbia law firms over the years and finished her career working in the Clerk's Office of the S.C. House of Representatives. After retirement, Jeanette and Sam traveled a bit, going to Europe and making numerous shorter trips to visit old friends around the United States. They moved to the Still Hopes retirement community in West Columbia in 2005 where she was residing in the skilled nursing unit at her passing.

She is survived by her three children, Jeane C. Campbell of Abbeville, Diane Cartledge of Charleston and Sam B. Cartledge III of Columbia. She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas M. Watts and sisters, Frances W. Collins and Evelyn W. Pleming.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, December 10, 2010, in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, December 9, 2010, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

The family wishes to once again thank the staff of Harmony Health Care Hospice and the Still Hopes staff in the Jane Bruce Guinyard Facility for their care and diligence in caring for our mother in her final months.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Epworth Children's Home, 2900 Millwood Ave., Columbia, SC 29205.
