Betty Jean Smith Carruth, 75, of Tuscumbia, Ala., died Dec. 7, 2010.
Visitation will be noon-2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Colbert Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the chapel, with burial to follow at Colbert Memorial Gardens.
Officiating will be Brother Larry Smart.
Betty was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She graduated from Russellville High School in 1954 and University Hospital in Birmingham in 1957.
Mother loved life; she enjoyed her career as an RN in surgery. She worked for more than 40 years at Colbert County Hospital, Shoals Hospital and ECM Hospital. She always enjoyed working with many nurses and doctors during the 40 years. She was an avid cook, making cheese straws and pound cakes for many friends and people she loved.
In later years, Betty and Charles enjoyed the garden and canning her fresh vegetables.
Through the years, they traveled with children and dear friends to the beach and many cruises.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond "Shorty" and Mary Smith; infant son, Raymond Franklin Carruth; grandson, Christopher Lee Wallace; brothers, Harold Smith, Paul Smith, Romie Smith, Daniel Smith; sisters, Verlon Smith and Shirley Smith.
Survivors include her husband of 53 wonderful years, Charles "Bud" Carruth; daughters, Alison Pigg (Tommy) and Susan Wallace (Mike); grandchildren, Rebekah Pigg Miller (Richard), Andrew Pigg (Kayla), Samuel Wallace, Seth Wallace and Matthew Wallace; great-grandson, Jack Miller; brothers, Rudy Smith and David Smith; sisters-in-law, Jean Smith, Liz Carruth and Alda Jordan (Charlie); many loving and special nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Glenwood Rehabilitation, J.W. Sommer and Florence Convalescent Center for the weeks of stay during the past five years. A very special thank you to Morningside Assisted Living staff, Wiregrass Hospice and Dr. David Brown, Dr. Stanley Clark, Dr. Patel, Dr. Hagler, Dr. Daugherty, Bonnie Hoover, Tracy Sparks and Northwest Alabama Cancer Center for the love and care given our dear loved one.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Andrew Pigg, Samuel Wallace, Seth Wallace, Matthew Wallace, Richard Miller, and nephew, Hugh Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 1281 Old Highway 24, Trinity, AL 35673, Highland Baptist Church Building Fund, 219 Simpson St., Florence, AL 35630 or Calvary Baptist Church, 601 N. Main St., Tuscumbia, AL 35674, American Cancer Society for the Research in Renal Cell Carcinoma.
