David Glen "Mike" Harris, 96, of Central City died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Long Term Care in Central City. Mike was born on July 25, 1914, in Chapman to William D. and Josephine (Farrell) Harris.

Survivors are: wife, Jenny of Central City; daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene Wobig of Kansas City, Mo., Claire and Nick Longly of Kearney, Robbie and Fred McHargue of Lincoln and Mickey and Darrell Eggli of Aurora; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Nance Harris of Lincoln; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mike received his education at District 39 School near Chapman. Mike lived in Central City, Clarks and Chapman all of his life except for a few years that he lived and worked in Iowa, Colorado and California. On Feb. 20, 1952, Mike was united in marriage with Genevive "Jenny" Steinke. Mike worked as a farm hand for many area farmers, he worked for Ned Carlson at Standard Oil, at Woody's Cafe, at the Co-op in Clarks, and in 1973 he became the sexton of the Central City Cemetery and retired in 1988.

Mike was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City. He was active in the communities he lived in and believed in the importance of community service. He was an active member of Riverside Golf Course in Central City, the Clarks Lions Club, he served has mayor of Clarks, was a Merrick County Supervisor, and was a 60 year member of AA. Mike loved playing cards and was a member of the Warm Slough Card Club and the Independent Club cards and coffee crew. He enjoyed horse races, Las Vegas, and playing pitch. For his entire life he was passionate about baseball and coached American Legion Baseball in Central City and Clarks. Mike loved to laugh, he kept current with world affairs and was not afraid to share his opinion. His greatest love was for his family and he was an inspiration to his grandchildren. His favorite times were when the whole family gathered together.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James, Leo, Orville, Francis "Chick", John "Jack", and Clarence "Swede" Harris; sisters, Hanora "Belle" Atwood, Iva Claire Widman, Mary Eleanor Frazier, and Helen "Tad" Harris".
