John Arnold Birrell, age 71, passed away on December 8, 2010 in West Jordan, Utah after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 18, 1939 to John Walker Birrell Jr. and Elizabeth Giauque.

On March 30, 1962, he married the love of his life, Gayle Widdison, in the Salt Lake Temple, where they were sealed for time and all eternity.

He grew up in Twin Falls, Idaho, where his family owned the local 7-Up bottling company. He graduated from Twin Falls High School and earned a Bachelor's of Accounting from BYU, where he also earned a letter in baseball.

He served many LDS missions throughout his life, to Sydney, Australia, and later with his wife in the Salt Lake City Inner-city mission and to Birmingham, Alabama.

Arn worked for many years for the family bottling company in Cedar City, Utah, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Twin Falls, Idaho. He later worked for the 7-Up bottling company in Salt Lake City, and as a CPA for Sorenco, Snelgrove's, and finally for many years at the Utah State Bar, where he retired to his 1/2 acre "farm" in 2007.

He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many callings through the years. His favorite calling was as gospel doctrine teacher. He also served as a ward clerk, high councilman, and as a stake auditor.

He was an avid fan of BYU. He was a football stadium donor and Cougar Club member. He very rarely missed a football or basketball game over the past thirty years. He also loved gardening and flowers and he took pride in his yard.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle; five children: Cheryl (Steve) Sillitoe of Cedar City, UT; Becky (Craig) Schaugaard of Ogden, UT; John (Jeralyn) Birrell of Kaysville, UT; Lisa (John) Riley of West Jordan, UT; and Robert (Jennifer) Birrell of West Jordan, UT; thirteen grandchildren: Chad (Tami) Sillitoe, Sandy (Wade) Backer, Gary (Megan) Schaugaard, Jamie (Beau) Shaner, Christopher Sillitoe, Korbin Birrell, Amber Schaugaard, Krissinie Birrell, Austin Birrell, Kaitlin Schaugaard, Briawna Birrell, Tait Birrell, and Luke Riley; and three great-grandchildren: Kailey, Madeline and Tucker with one on the way; three siblings: Sharon (Rod) Hammer of Orem, UT; Dennis (JoAnn) Birrell of Nampa, ID; and Richard (Dianne) Birrell of Twin Falls, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents.
