Mrs. Thomas W. Wells, Sr.
Mary A. Steele, daughter of Wm. and Ann Steele, was born April 15th, 1805, in Baltimore, Md., and when quite young she removed with her parents to New York city, where, at 16 she united with the Presbyterian church, and on Jan. 31st, 1826, married Thos. W. Wells. In 1836 Mr. W. came to Michigan, and located the south half of section nine in the township of Marshall. The next year he went back to New York and brought his family to the new home in the woods. Mr. and Mrs. Wells both united with the Presbyterian church soon after coming to this vicinity. In February, 1845, Mr. Wells died, the widow assumed the management of the farm and continued to reside there until 1863, when she removed to this city and soon after withdrew from the Presbyterian church and united with the Trinity Episcopal. She has since made her home here, although she spent three years during the war of the rebellion, in the U.S. Sanitary Department stationed at Jefferson Barracks hospital, St. Louis, Mo., and four years past has been with her daughter in Hohokus, N.J. About three months ago she came west to visit, going first to the home of her daughter in Chicago, and early last month came here with her son T.W. Last week Tuesday night she was taken sick, but it was Friday morning before the disease, pneumonia, developed sufficiently to alarm her friends. After she grew rapidly worse and died peacefully at 7:30 that evening-Friday, Oct. 31st, 1890. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, in Trinity church, Rev. Dr. VanAntwerp, the rector, officiating. Among the many in attendance were an unusually large number of our old residents, who came to pay their last respects to the memory of their departed friend and co-la-borer in the pioneer work of old Calhoun. Of Mrs. Wells' three daughters, and three sons Mill Lillie, of Hohokus, N.J., Mrs. Sarah Winans, of Chicago, and Thos. W., of this city, survive. She also left fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
