City Attorney Joseph D. Harris
__________

Man Who Has Won by Capacity and Fitness

Joseph Dean Harris, city attorney of Carthage, is a young man in years but mature in thought and manner, dignified and deliberate in action and moreover to the manner born being especially a Jasper County product, having been born, reared, educated and admitted to the bar in this county, in which also he has resided all his lifetime, thus far.
Mr. Harris is the son of Sylvester D. and Mary Patterson Harris, the former a native of New York state, the latter of North Carolina. He was born on a farm, December 25, 1877; was educated in the public schools and graduated from Carthage Collegiate Institute in 1899. He soon afterward entered the office of Judge Amon Green and there studied law, being admitted to the bar in April of 1900. He has gradually, but surely built up a general practice and his special talents of analysis, careful conduct of cases and excellent manner of presentation of argument, with quick insight into the gist of legal points are issue and citation of law and authorities, decisions, etc., have rapidly won him reputation and standing.
In politics a Republican and active in party work, he was a very natural selection for the office he fills so well and to which he was elected to 1904. June 17, 1903, he married Miss Mary K. Maxwell, of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, a very charming and talented lady and delightful addition to Carthage society. Mr. Harris is a Modern Woodman and active in fraternal work, talented and properly ambitious. It will surprise none who know him to see him rising to greater official dignity and prestige.
