Sgt US Air Force - Vietnam

Anchorage Daily News August 20, 2006

Anchorage resident James Ernest Stephens, 62, died Aug. 13, 2006, at a friend's home in Anchorage. A graveside service with military honors was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. A celebration of life was held at Leake Temple AME Zion Church in Mountain View.

Mr. Stephens was born Jan. 4, 1944, in Spokane, Wash., to James and Tallulah Stephens. He moved to Alaska in 1975. His family said: "Big Jim lived life to its fullest and could brighten any room with his personality. Jim, known for his robust laugh, endless smile, giving nature, quick wit and infectious nature, was a longtime resident of Alaska who spent many years in the commercial fishing industry. He was a pioneer in the commercial crab industry in Kodiak. After the physical demands of commercial fishing took their toll, Jim had a partnership in a private detective agency. Jim was always proud to be a veteran of the Vietnam conflict. Much of Jim's life was spent involved with Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous, as a member and a sponsor, where he helped hundreds of people. Most recently, Jim drove a cab, which gave him another way of helping people in their everyday lives. Jim will be remembered by all those who knew him, as he lived life large, much like Alaska, the place he called home and loved."

Mr. Stephens is survived by his daughters, Rachel Stephens of Baltimore and Syringa Burns of McCall, Idaho; sister, Patricia Stephens of Seattle; brother, Jack Stephens of Seattle; and nephew, David Voye of Seattle. Arrangements are by Anchorage Funeral Home and Crematory.
