SSG US Army - World War II, Korea and Vietnam

Anchorage Daily News September 11, 2007:

Anchorage resident James Edward Swafford, 87, died Sept. 8, 2007, at an assisted living home in Anchorage. A funeral was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. A burial service with military honors was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Born Jan 26, 1920, in Welling, Okla., Jim grew up in the hill country of eastern Oklahoma, where he learned to be an excellent marksman and hunter. He had a full career in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, the Korean War, the Dominican Republic conflict and Vietnam before retiring. He earned certification from an A/P school to become an aviation mechanic. His skills in aviation mechanics brought him to Alaska in 1969 to work as a helicopter mechanic, which was his career through the TAPS construction period and for many years afterward. His family wrote: "Jim loved to hunt and fish. He loved to tell stories of his experiences while hunting or fishing in the wilds of Alaska. He could spin quite a colorful yarn. He had quite an enjoyable sense of humor."

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Swafford; son, Guy E. Swafford; daughters, Grace O'Brien and Ginger Nishimoto; and eight grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his grandchildren, James and Kate Luther; son-in-law, Ted Luther; and sister, Opal Holt.
