Thomas "Tom" L. Sloat of Anchorage died Feb. 7, 2009, at home. He was 58.

Tom was born April 8, 1950, in Iron River, Mich. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired in 1989 as a communications systems security analyst. He moved to Alaska in 1991, and lived in Eagle River before moving to Anchorage in 2005. He was employed by Loomis Fargo Inc. as a loss prevention manager. Tom was an NRA certified instructor who enjoyed teaching firearms safety. He also loved camping, target shooting and having spirited political discussions with elected officials. He was a life member of AMVETS and participated in activities at AMVETS Post 2.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Sandra; his son, Thomas "Butch" of Prescott, Ariz.; his sister, Nancy of Tokyo; and his brother, James of Enon, Ohio.

Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jurtsen Sloat; father, James Lionel Sloat; and brother, Robert. A celebration of life was at AMVETS Post 2. A burial service was at Fort Richardson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom's honor to the Salvation Army, 143 E. Ninth Ave., Anchorage 99501 or AMVETS, 855 E. 38th Ave., in Anchorage 99503.
