POCATELLO - James A. "Jim" Stitt, 86, of Pocatello, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, following a short illness.

He was born Oct. 2, 1924, to Samuel Charles and Helen Wraspir Stitt, in American Falls, Idaho. Jim attended school in American Falls through high school. He graduated in 1942, as a member of the Class B, American Falls Beavers championship basketball team. He attended the University of Idaho in Moscow in 1942-43.

He then began his active duty military career in August 1943, as an aviation cadet. He was honorably discharged in April 1947, as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. Jim was a pilot with four-engine certification and a supply officer. He immediately applied for and was accepted to the Army Reserve, finally retiring in January 1972, as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve.

Jim attended the University of Idaho, Southern Branch in Pocatello to earn his carpentry certification. He worked for several local contractors in his early career and ended his career as the house carpenter at Bannock Memorial Hospital, retiring in October 1987.

After retirement Jim and his wife, Grace, who were married June 19, 1949, traveled extensively. He was an avid sportsman his entire life.

Jim is survived by one son, J. Bruce Stitt, of Louisville, KY; one daughter, Janis Stitt, of Pocatello; his younger brother, Richard R. Stitt, Federal Way, WA; one granddaughter, Natilee Riedman; and five nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, and his parents.

Cremation has been completed. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church, 202 S. Seventh Ave., Pocatello, Idaho, with the Rev. Pamela Mayes officiating. The family will receive friends and family immediately following the service.
