“Daniel Scofield was born in the village of Hipperholme.”
As you will note, the compendium only mentions the grandfather of Daniel Scofield. This is because Sir Cuthbert Scofield was not married to the mother of his son Alexander Scofield, the father of Daniel Scofield. Sir Cuthbert was first married to Ann, the daughter of Sir John Byron (poet). They divorced and he cohabited with Joney Langley. They had two illegitimate boys, Daniel and Richard Scofield.
Daniel Scofield and his brother, Richard Scofield, sailed from Ipswich, England on the 'Susan & Ellen' in 1635 when Richard was 22 yrs old. Daniel Scofield is not listed on the passenger list. "Richard settled at Ipswich, Mass 1641-52 and came to Stamford in a latter year." (See Ancestry of Washington & Allied Families, [The Washington Ancestry: and records of the McClain, Johnson, and Forty Other Colonial American Families] Vol 3 by Hoppin). First record of Daniel in America was when as a founder of Stamford, Conn, he was granted a "home lot" there 7 Dec 1641. Daniel's will dated 4 Sept 1669 was entered for probate "7 mo. 1669/1770".
Richard and Daniel Scofield are the immigrant ancestor of the Scofield American branch. D. Fairchild Wheeler's Report of the Second Triennial Reunion of the Association of Descendants of Andrew Ward At the First Congregational Church of Stamford, (1908): Page 11: "Daniel Scofield. The founder and first marshal, received December 7, 1641, a two-acre homelot and woodland. He died in 1671. He was a man of note in private and civil life. His widow, Mary, married Miles Merwin of Milford, Conn., (his third venture). It is said that the Dutchess of Marlborough (Lilly Price Hammersley) comes from the same Scofield family, of Scofield Manor Rochdale, Lancashire, England. The late General John McAllister Scofield wrote a personal letter over a quarter of a century ago, and in referring to my family traditions he said: "I come from the same ancestors: these traditions are all familiar ones to me." He was in command of West Point, a very fine officer and a scholar of high standing. Ex-Governor Scofield of Wisconsin, Rev. C. I. Scofield of Northfield, Mass, General Alexander Stewart Webb, and eminent writers, lawyers, and statesmen are from this same Daniel Scofield stock"
History of Stamford, Connecticut, From Its Settlement in 1641 to the Present Time, including Darien, Rev. E. B. Huntington, A. M. (1868): Pg 41.
"SCOFiELD, Daniel, received, Dec. 7, 1641, two acres, homelot and woodland, as the first company. He died in 1671. His children were Daniel, John, Richard, Joseph, Sarah the wife of John Pettit, and Mary. His widow Mary, became the third wife ot Miles Merwin. The son Joseph suflered so much from hardships in King Philip's war as to lose his life in 1676, giving his estate to his brothers and sisters. His will, dated Sept.4,1664, gives to his wife one-third the estate, with use of the house for her life time ; to his daughter Sarah, five pounds ; and to her two children five pounds; and to the other four children, Daniel, John, Jeseph [Joseph], and Mercy, the rest of the estate. His wife and two of the sons, Daniel and John, were made executors."
Daniel Scofield was born in the village of Hipperholme in the ancient parish of Halifax, Yorkshire (West Riding), England, presumably within a month prior to his baptism in St. John the Baptist Church, Halifax, 10 April 1614. His parents were Richard Scofield, probable son of Oswald and Alice (Barowcloughe) Scofield, and Richard's wife, Effam/Effan Northend, daughter of Henry and Effam (Lister) Northend of Northowram (also in Halifax parish, two miles from Hipperholme); Effam Lister's father was Richard Lister (Louis G. Ogden and Brent M. Owen, "The English Origins of Richard1 Scofield, Daniel1 Scofield, and John1 Northend of Stamford, Connecticut," _Connecticut Ancestry_ 59:3[Feb. 2017]:81–100).
No marriage record has been found for Daniel, and since only one of his children's baptisms is recorded (Mercy, "latter end" of November 1657), estimating even a year of marriage would be pure speculation. It is certain, however, that the maiden name of Daniel's wife, Sarah, was not Youngs (see James Raywalt, "The Identity of Sarah, Wife of Daniel Scofield and Miles Merwin — Still a Mystery," _New England Historical and Genealogical Register_ 152(1998):179–83). There is evidence that Sarah's maiden name might have been Graves (see Fred C. Hart Jr., _Ancestry of William Weed of Stamford and Darien, Connecticut_ [Broomfield, Colo., 2009], 22–25, at 24–25).
Daniel Scofield died probably within a month prior to 10 12th month [February] 1669[/70], when his estate inventory was taken; it was presented at probate court on 7 1st month [March] 1669/70 (Fairfield District Probate, 2:49–50). Daniel's will, dated 4 September 1669, was probated on 10 March 1669/70 (ibid., 2:50).
The Hale Collection of Connecticut Cemetery Inscriptions has no listing for Daniel Scofield in North Stamford Cemetery or elsewhere.
