Margaret's family moved from Tompkins Co., New York to Bradford Co., Pennsylvania in the late 1830s. The Wm Thompson family is enumerated in the 1840 census of South Creek Twp., Bradford County. In his household are two females age 10-14 years, or born 1825-1830. One of those females is believed to be Margaret Thompson.

The place where Margaret's family settled was originally named Pigeon Hill and was later renamed Thompson Hill, likely for her father who was an early settler. An 1858 Bradford County map shows the property of W Thompson located near the intersection of present-day Hi Run and Thompson Hill roads.

Margaret married James Kline on 12 Nov 1845 at the home of her parents in South Creek Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. Her parents' home was located a short distance west of his parents' home, on Thompson Hill Road. At the time of their marriage James was aged about 25 years and Margaret was aged about 20 years. Margaret gave birth to at least 6 children, named Guy, Orr, Hamilton, John, Silsby, and Rhoda Kline.

James, Margaret and four children are enumerated in the 1860 census at South Creek Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. Margaret is aged 33 years and born in New York. She and James are farming. Enumerated in their houshold are children named Guy, Ham, John, and Silsby Kline. Guy is born in New York and his younger siblings are born in Pennsylvania.

James enlisted on 25 Oct 1862, as Private, in Company D, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry. At the time of enlistment James was about 43 years old. In July 1863, James was captured by the enemy at Shepherdstown, West Virginia and died 25 Feb 1864 in Libby Prison Hospital, Richmond, Virginia.

As far as known Margaret never remarried. In 1865, she applied for and received a certificate for a widow's pension that entitled her to $12 a month. Additionally, she received $2 a month for each of her four children, until their 16th birthdays. The living children were listed, viz.: Ham T, John W, Silsby J, and Rhoda J Kline.

In the 1869 Bradford County atlas a property labeled "Mrs. M Kline" is shown on the map of South Creek Township, District No. 6. Listed in the South Creek Township Business Directory is "Margaret J. Kline" but no occupation or business is shown.

Margaret is enumerated as the head of household in the 1870 census at South Creek Township. She is aged 43 years and born in New York. She and her children are farming. The real estate value of the Kline property is $2500 and the personal property value is $425. Enumerated in her household are her children, named Ham, John, Silsbry, and Roda Kline.

Margaret and her children removed to Wisconsin, circa 1875. Margaret is enumerated as a head of household in the 1880 census at Jenny, Lincoln Co., Wisconsin. She is aged 53 years and her marital status is Widowed. The birthplace of her father is Ireland and the birthplace of her mother is Pennsylvania. Residing in her household are sons Ham and Silsby Kline. Also, enumerated in her household is Tim Thompson, aged 22 years and born in Pennsylvania.

M J Klin is enumerated as a head of household in the 1900 census at Merrill, Lincoln Co., Wisconsin. She is aged 74 years and born in New York. Her marital status is Widowed. She has given birth to 6 children and 3 children are still living. She owns a house and no occupation is written for her. The birthplace of her father is Ireland; the birthplace of her mother is not written in the census record.

Destitute and without money and property to support herself Margaret applied for admission to the Wisconsin Veterans' Home, in 1905. She surrendered her widow's pension to the Home and agreed to do a reasonable amount of work in and about the Home. She claimed no disease or disability at the time of her application. Margaret was admitted to the Home and died there, in 1907. Her death certificate gives the cause of death as Senile Debility; Opium Habit.

Margaret died aged 81 years.
