A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 18, 1864, and mustered into federal service there August 23 as a private with Co. B, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry. Almost immediatly, he began suffering a series of illness, including diarrhea, rheumatism, ulcers, and typhoid fever. Thus, he was in and out of a variety of military hospitals and finally discharged the service by surgeon's certificate from Harewood U.S. General Hospital, Washington DC.

After the war, censuses show that, in 1870-80m he lived in Goldsboro, York County. in 1890, in York Borough, York County (but also listed in New Cumberland, Cumberland County), and in 1900 resided in Steelton, Dauphin County, where he died.
