He served his country in her trouble during the civil strife. He mustered in Sep 1864, from Berks county, Pa. as a private to serve one year, or during the war, in the 198th Regiment, Pa. Vol., under the command of Col. Horatio G. Sickel. The regiment was assigned to the First Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac, and he shared the fortunes of the regiment in all its movements and engagements, including the battles of People's Farm, raid on Southside Railroad, Weldon Railroad, Hatcher's Run, White Oak Swamps, Five forks and Appomatox, where Lee surrendered.
