Champion Boxer. William and George LaVigne grew up in the lumber camps near Zilwaukee, Michigan fighting with each other, as brothers will. George was very adept at bare knuckle boxing, so his older brother William “Billy” became his coach. Billy called him ‘Kid’ and young George started fighting with the lumbermen while bets were placed. George won frequently! George was so successful, that in 1886, at the age of 16 he turned pro. Because he started fighting in the Saginaw area, he became known as “The Saginaw Kid”. “The Saginaw Kid” OR “Kid Lavigne” was undefeated for 13 years and 46 matches per The Saginaw News – September 1st, 2013. He held the World Lightweight boxing title for a few years. Lavigne has been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame, the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame and the Bay County Sports Hall of Fame.
