Lee Samuel "Sam" Burns, 82, of Houston, died on Sunday, December 5, 2010, in a Houston hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 9, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Ackerly with the Rev. Ray McMorris, pastor, and Derrick Looney, pastor of Forsan Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment will follow at Ackerly Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at the funeral home

He was born on September 16, 1928, in Ackerly, Texas and married Janie McEndree. She preceded him in death on August 27, 2010.

He grew up in the Ackerly Community and attended school at Flower Grove and in Lamesa, where he played football. He attended both McMurry University in Abilene and Hill College in Hillsboro, playing football at both schools. He also boxed with the Golden Gloves organization while in college. Sam joined the United States Marine Corps and retired as a Major after 20 years of service. He then attended the University of Houston Law School and practiced law in Houston for over 40 years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Ackerly and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Lynda and Jim Perry of Ackerly; a grandson, Harvey Lee Burns Jr. of Houston; a granddaughter, Cheryl Harrell of Houston; two nephews, Bart Burns and Vincent Burns, both of Brownfield; and four nieces, Cindy Smith of Lamesa, Mendy Burns of Brownfield, Sheri Sanderson of El Paso and Jessica Goodman of San Angelo.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Lucille Burns; a son, Harvey Lee Burns; and a brother, James N. Burns.
