He served his country in her trouble during the civil strife. His record is as follows: He enlisted August 25, 1864, from Berks county, Pa. He was mustered into service as a Private to serve one year, or during the war, in Company G, 198th Regt., Penna. Vol. Infantry. Under the command of Capt William L. Guinther and Colonel H.G. Sickel where the regiment was assigned to the First Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps., Army of the Potomac. He shared the fortunes of the regiment in all it's movements and engegements, including the battles of People's Farm on September 30, 1864; a raid on Southside Railroad, October 27, 1864; Weldon Railroad, December 6, 1864; Hatcher's Run, February 8, 1965; White Oak Swamps, March 31, 186; Five Forks, April 1, 1865, and Appomatox, April 9, 1865, where General Lee surrendered.
