OBITUARY OF PATRICK J. FAGAN
(Monticello Express)

Patrick J. Fagan died at his home in Monticello, last Saturday afternoon, (January 7th) following severe illness. The funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart church in Monticello, last Tuesday morning, (January 10th.) Mass was celebrated by Rev. George A._Hauck, the pastor of that church. Burial was had at the Temple Hill cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. Thomas Powers, F. P. McNamara, John Leonard, William Aitchison, Thomas Green, James McCormick, Thomas Shanahan and Michael Supple.

Mr. Fagan was born in County Meath, Ireland, Nov. 13, 1816. He was the son of Thomas and Mary (O'Brien) Fagan. When he was an infant, three months old, his parents immigrated to the United States. It required nine weeks' time for them to make the voyage on a sailing vessel. They landed in New York City, April 12, 1847. The senior Mr. Fagan and his family settled at Jersey City, New Jersey, where he gained employment as an overseer in a starch factory. The family continued to make their home in Jerroy City until the fall of 1856 when they removed to Jones county, Iowa, and settled in Scotch Grove township.

Patrick Fagan made his home in that township from 1856 until February 28, 1921, when he removed with his family to Monticello. Mr. Fagan was married to Miss Ellen Milan at St. Peter's church, Temple Hill, February 3, 1885. There were seven children born to this union, five of whom together with their mother survive. The children are Thomas W. and Bernard M. Fagan, of Scotch Grove township, Mrs. Bernard Keating, of Clay township, Mrs. Thomas E. McNamara, of Jackson township, and Miss Frances Fagan, of Monticello.

Mr. Fagan is also survived by one brother and two sisters, John Fagan, of Otter Creek, Jackson county, Mrs. J. E. Flanigan, of Temple Hill, and Mrs. Michael Powers, of
Clay township. Mr. Fagan's death is the first break in his father's family.

Mr. Fagan was an honest man, who had a reputation which was above reproach. He was just in his dealings with all people with whom he came in contact in a business way. He was a member of the Catholic church, and died with a lasting trust in its teachings. The family home will sadly miss the passing of this kind husband and good father.
