John Warren Smedberg was born September 16, 1921 in College Place, Washington to Carl and Opal (Engeberg) Smedberg. He moved with his family to several locations before settling in Hackensack, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army in August 16, 1943 where he served as a combat medic with the 112th 28th Keystone Infantry Division. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart and Silver Star. He was discharged October 20, 1945. On March 14, 1944 he married LuVerne Bondy in Bemidji, MN. Along with his wife, LuVerne, they designed and built their own line of ricing canoes called Neh-Gig Marine. The lived in Bemidji and Guthrie. For over 50 years has been head elder at Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was always ready to help whenever he was asked.

John Smedberg, 86, of Bemidji, Minnesota, died Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Havenwood Care Center, Bemidji, MN.

Memorial Services will be held, 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Bemidji, Minnesota, Pastor Eugene Johnson officiating. Family will greet friends 1 hour before the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Guthrie Cemetery, Hubbard County, Minnesota. Funeral services were entrusted to the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, MN.

He is survived by his son, Ron Smedberg of Laporte, MN, special niece, Patty Morris of Bemidji, MN, 2 sisters, Joyce Rideout of Brainerd, MN and Betty Peppel of Hackensack, Minnesota.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, wife, LuVerne Smedberg, Daughter-in-law, Bonnie Smedberg.
