Leroy F. "Pete" Barnhart, 90, of 1420 ½ E. Ninth, died unexpectedly Nov. 23, 1994, at his home.
Born Jan. 21, 1914, in Hoosier, he was the son of Francis and Lula (Asbury) Barnhart. He received his early education in Cowley County rural schools and later attended Winfield schools. As a youth, he began work as a ranch hand and horseman.
A world War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he returned to Kansas following discharge. He worked on ranches throughout the state, residing in Medicine Lodge and Dexter for many years. Mr. Barnhart was well known as a horseman and had personally broken more than 170 horses.
In 1984, he married Carole J. McBride in Missouri. The couple lived in Winfield throughout their marriage.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife Carole, Winfield; four daughter, Step-father, Walter Askins, Winfield; brother, John Barnhart, Winfield; half-brother, Cecil Askins, Winfield; and a half sister.
Military graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland cemetery.
Visitation will be until 8 p.m. tonight and before noon Saturday at Miles Funeral Service.
A memorial in Mr. Barnhart's name has been established for the benefit of his family. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service, which is in charge of arrangements.
