As a civil engineer, he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company B, 1st Engineers Regiment, Confederate States of America.

He was asked to come to Alabama by General Ira Foster to build a road up Georgia Mountain. Came, built the road, fell in love with the General's daughter and stayed.

He surveyed and built many roads in Marshall County and north Alabama during his career, and was a Judge in Marshall County later in his life.
