Architect, Army Lt. Colonel during WWII, explosives expert and amateur historian.

Stratton Hammon was a life long Louisvillian known primarily for his designs for more than 100 houses in Louisville and Kentucky. He worked in traditional historical revival styles, most notably Colonial Revival. His designs have been featured in a book about his life and work, an exhibition at the Speed Museum, Filson Historical Society lectures and home tours. Hammon was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army during World War II supervising construction projects for the Army Corps of Engineers and was one of the famed "Monuments Men" who were responsible for locating and repatriating European art treasures stolen by the Nazis during the war. In later years, he was an expert witness on construction-related subjects including the effects of explosives on structural integrity. He was an opinionated and colorful character who was a frequent contributor of letters to the editor on various subjects that interested him. He was married three times and was the father of three children.
