Vera was born April 28, 1923 in Frederic to Walter and Annie (Melby) Nelson. She attended Milltown Schools, Superior State Teachers College and Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn. She married Gordon Peterson of Luck in 1947. They resided in Winona and St. Paul, Minn.
Her ambition as a child was to become a teacher. This goal became a reality as she taught school (elementary) in Osceola, Trempeleau and Fountain City and in St. Paul, Minn., for a total of 40 years.
She and Gordon enjoyed traveling and their lake home on Balsam Lake. As a member of the Central Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school, participated in the women's activities and worked in the church library.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, in 1988; parents; sisters, Iola and Patricia; and brothers, Leroy and Marvin.
She is survived by son Glen (Juli); grandchildren, Kimberly (Brook) Hodson, Michael Peterson and Carrie Walesheck; great-grandson, Galen Hodson; sisters, Ruby (Gordon) Neslund and Mary (Darold) Peterson; brothers, Gregory (Sue) Nelson and Edward (Sandy) Prodger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Wednesday, April 21, at the Holcomb-Henry-Boom Funeral Home in Shoreview, Minn.; and one hour before service at the Central Baptist Church in St. Paul. Graveside service will be Thursday, April 22, 2:30 p.m., at the Milltown Cemetery in Milltown.
