Lewis Philestus Adkins, Private, Company C, 48th Iowa Infantry Battalion. He voluntarily enlisted on 13 July 1864 at Davenport, Iowa and mustered out with the regiment 21 October 1864. The 48th Iowa Infantry was one of several 100-day regiments recruited to relieve veteran troops needed for the Atlanta Campaign. The 48th Iowa Infantry guarded prisoners of war at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois.

Lewis Adkins (son of James Jones Adkins and Susan McDaniel) was born 30 January 1846, Chestnut, Knox County, Illinois; died 18 September 1913, Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri; and buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, St Clair County, Missouri. He was a farmer and member of the Brethren Church.

Lewis married Amanda Jane Burns (daughter of James Wesley Burns and Katherine Clark) on 27 March 1868, Pleasant, Mercer County, Missouri. Amanda was born 25 September 1852, Iowa; died 27 April 1925, Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri; and buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, St Clair County, Missouri. She was a member of the Brethren Church.

Oak Grove Cemetery is located on County Road SE726 off Highway V, St Clair County, Missouri, at coordinates N37 54’ 65” and W93 43’ 53”. The cemetery was originally associated with the Osceola Brethren Church. Lewis’ grave has a military and private headstone, and is registered with the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW).
