He was wounded by a gunshot in his right lung on 3 Apr 1865 at Hatcher's Run and was captured. John was admitted into the Fairgrounds Hospital, Petersburg, VA, on 8 Apr. He died two days later and was buried in a cemetery attached to the hospital. His name is inscribed as "BOWERS, J." on the Confederate Monument in the Town Square, Newberry, SC.
