ELMER L. HAYES
Sunday, April 29, Chazy lost one of its moist highly esteemed residents in the death of Elmer L. Hayes.
Born March 31, 1860. at Champlain,the son of Lucius D. Hayes and Sarah Ann Philips, he had been
for more than 50 years a resident of Chazy.
July 2, 1881, he was united in marriage to Nellie M. Leazott of Chazy.
Of this union were born five daughters and a son, all of whom survive:Mrs. Bessie M. Ingalls,Flint, Mich.;Mrs. George Brown, Payetteville;Nina I. Lombard, Hartford, N. Y.;Mrs. Henry Havens,Hudson Falls;Mrs. Louis Duane. Long Lake; and E. Floyd Hayes of Swartz Creek,Mich.
He also is survived by 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren;two sisters, Mrs. Cora
Wortman, East Saugus, Mass., and Mrs. Grace Dodds of Whitehall. On June 28, 1931, Mrs. Hayes, a devoted wife and, mother passed away after 50 years of wedded life.
Mr. Hayes was keenly interested in business and civic enterprises in the community, his many sterling qualities and scrupulous honesty made him highly regarded among a wide circle of friends. For years he was in charge of the Chazy branch of the Plattsburgh Dock and Coal Company and succeeded in building up the agency to a prosperous position. He also was interested in farming for a number of years and the problems of the farmer were of particular interest to him.
Always religiously inclined, he became an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Chazy, joining in 1885 and remaining a faithful and devout member until his death. On September 27,1932, he was married to Mrs. Emma Saxtwell Alford of Mooers Forks,who also survives him.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, May 2, from the Methodist Church at Chazy. The Pastor, Rev. Elbert Parkhurst, officiated.
During the services two hymns, favorites of the deceased,were rendered by Morris C. Lucia of West Chazy. Interment was in the family plot in Riverview Cemetery at Chazy.
