Cathy Jane Brand Harvin SUMMERTON, SC -
Cathy Jane Brand Harvin, 56, widow of Charles Alexander "Alex" Harvin, died Saturday, December 4, 2010, at MUSC Hospital in Charleston from complications due to breast cancer.

Rep. Harvin was born on December 31, 1953, in Quantico, VA the daughter of Janet A. and Hyman J. Brand.

She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1975.

In 1982, she married Representative Charles Alexander Harvin III. After his untimely death in 2005, she honored her husband's wishes by continuing to serve District No. 64, Clarendon-Williamsburg counties, the constituency that he cared for so deeply.

She also continued to manage a successful business as Major Accounts Manager for Dell Computers. Additionally, she served her community and state in the following ways: Board of Trustees, S.C. Higher Educ. Foundation since 2001, serving as Chairman from 2001 to 2006; Lightsey Society since 2006; Santee Lynches Regional Council for Governments Board since 2006; S.C. Commission on Higher Education from 1999 to 2002; Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees, 1993 to 2006; Pee Dee Regional Education Foundation Board, 1994-1998; Sumter, Clarendon, Lee United Way Regional Board, 1992-1998; President, Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, 1994; Graduate Leadership South Carolina, 1994; Medical Military Public & Municipal Affairs Committee since 2006; Chairman of the Subcommittee on Health and Environmental Affairs, since 2006; and Deputy Minority Leader since 2007.

She was a member of Summerton Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are: one daughter, Mary Franklin Harvin of Columbia; one sister, Diane Brand Hundley of Salisbury NC; and two nieces, Elizabeth and Margaret. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alexander Harvin III.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 1:00 p.m., at the Summerton Cultural Arts Center, 12 South Church Street, Summerton, with the Rev. Garland Hart, Rev. Rob Pierce, and Chaplain Charles E. Seastrunk Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Summerton.

Pallbearers will be George Wilson, Judge Percy Harvin, Harvin Brock, Kenneth Kennedy, Rep. Jim Battle, and Patrick Goodwin.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Stephens Funeral Home, 304 North Church Street, Manning, SC 29102.
