He was married three times: (1) Mary "Polly" Cannon (26 Aug 1849 at Carter, Tennessee) with whom he had at least nine children; (2) Eliza J. Grindstaff (12 Dec 1866 at Carter, Tennessee) with whom he had five children; and (3) Martha I. Slimp (20 Aug 1876 at Johnson, Tennessee) with whom he had eight children. He served pastorates at eight churches including Siam Baptist Church. There are family accounts that incorrectly say he was named John Leonard Teter Bowers.
