Mr. Muhs died Thursday, February 14, 2008, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, following a brief illness. Mel was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing.
Melvin Henry Muhs was born July 28, 1919, in Plainview, Iowa, the son of Herman N. and Anna (Paustian) Muhs. He was united in marriage to Marcella M. Seydel on January 24, 1948, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Davenport. She preceded him in death on September 10, 1991.
Mel began his career with the Rock Island Arsenal on May 12, 1941. After working for 14 months, he was called to active duty during World War II as a 2nd Lt. in the Army. He served overseas from August 1942 until September 1945. He went to Ireland then to Scotland and was among the first to land in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He returned to England and was among the first to land on "D" Day, June 6, 1944. Something that always bothered Mel was the fact that during his tour through France, Germany, Belgium and Holland, he did not see or talk with his family for over 39 months. He proudly served his country earning 8 Battle Stars and was honorably discharged as a Captain.
Following his military service, he returned to continue his career at the Arsenal for 35 years. Melvin was a member of VFW Post #828, Knights of Columbus, 532, Holy Family Catholic Church and was a volunteer pallbearer for the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Pallbearer Club. Memorials can be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Survivors include his eight children and their spouses, James and Janet Muhs, Mary Ann Kothenbeutel, Kathleen Muhs, Nancy and Joseph Schebler all of Davenport; Joan and Tom Fier, of Bettendorf, Dianne and Tommy Atchley of Huntsville, Ala., Pamela and Craig Hollister of Port Byron, Ill.; and Patricia and Craig Chappen of Robins, Iowa. He is also survived by his eighteen grandchildren, Karriann (Mike) Reising, Kristie Muhs and Craig Muhs; Bradley (Elizabeth) Kothenbeutel, Katherine (Mark) Kirkpatrick, Robert Kothenbeutel and Daniel Kothenbeutel; Eric Schebler and Jeffrey Schebler; Christopher Fier, Brian Fier, Patrick Fier and Kaitlyn Fier; Marcella Atchley, Travis Atchley and Troy Atchley; and Michael Chappen and Mark Chappen; 8 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Gary Gibson; and dear friends, Jack and Jean Gasser.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Melinda, Adeline, Alvina, Leone, Anne and Marjorie and his brother, Ferdinand. May they rest in peace.
