Arrived in the US with his family circa 1863. Reportedly, John and his father were magicians in Scotland, with John using the stage name of "Nicoli". John operated a photo studio in Monmouth. One of his more noted photographs was of a collision between two horses at the Warren county fair in Monmouth during 1888, in which both horses died. It was said to have been the first photograph to capture an accident as it occurred. John sold his photography studio to Mr. and Mrs. Fleming Long in 1901.

Burial was on August 20th.
