25th Governor of Oregon, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in World War I. From 1934 to 1943 served in the Oregon Senate, then re-enlisted for World War II and was discharged as a Major. He served as Governor of Oregon from 1949 to 1952, during which time he supported land and forest conservation. He left the position of Governor in 1952 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him Secretary of the Interior, a position he held until 1956.
