7th Oregon Governor. Sailed from New York to Oregon on the steamer "Empire City" in 1851. Returned to Oregon after the Civil War, and became a merchant serving the gold mining districts of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. He then became a deputy surveyor involved in public land surveying in the States of Oregon, Washington, and California. Prominent business man who ran a steamboat from The Dalles to Portland for many years. Elected as Governor of Oregon, serving from 1882 to 1887. Declining to run a second term, he evenutally became President of The Dalles Bank and managed his various business interests in Eastern Oregon until his death. His grave is unmarked.
