Mrs. Marilyn Ann Blanding fostered many animals in her lifetime. But most notably, she fostered Chipper the monkey, who she raised to assist quadriplegics through the Helping Hands Organization in Boston. The retired, second-grade, private-school teacher died of lung failure after a battle with cancer Monday (Dec. 16, 2002) at home. She was 71. "The foster care was like elementary school for the monkey. He learned the basics to be around humans, and as he got a little older, the Boston folks expected the foster parents to teach him to fetch something from the refrigerator and bring it to the person without eating it. His thing was grapes," said her son, William A. "Bill" Blanding of Alexandria, Va. "It was amazing watching the little guy grow up. It was like having a 2-year-old the entire time." Born in Winthrop, Mass., on May 7, 1931, she was raised in Ridgewood, N.J., where she attended Ridgewood High School. She received a mathematics degree from Syracuse University, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She married a Navy man, Robert L. Blanding, on May 9, 1953, and led an active life raising their three sons. "Being a Navy wife, she had to learn to do all the `father' kind of things for her children growing up," Bill Blanding said, noting that his mother was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and a baseball coach. "She was the equivalent to the `soccer mom,' where you're doing all the stuff." When her children were older, Mrs. Blanding began a career as a teacher that spanned nearly 20 years. The Blandings spent numerous summers in Babson Park before settling here permanently in a home overlooking Crooked Lake after her husband died Dec. 16, 1979. She enjoyed stitching needlework, swimming in the lake, reading novels and caring for her dogs. In addition to raising Chipper, she took in raccoons, rabbits and squirrels. She also enjoyed marine life and learned to scuba dive at age 54 in preparation for a sailing trip to the Virgin Islands. "She was always willing to lend a helping hand to the family and friends in times of need," Bill Blanding said. In addition to her son, Mrs. Blanding is survived by her sons, Walter H. Blanding, Seattle, Wayne R. Blanding, Groton, Conn.; sisters, Sandra McLuckie, Eastham, Mass., Catherine Jensen, Brookside, N.J.; two grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Marion Nelson Funeral Home, Lake Wales. Burial will be in Lake Wales Cemetery, next to her husband, at a site overlooking a small lake in honor of the Crooked Lake they so loved. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice.
