Francis E. (Doodle) Confer February 7, 1925 February 18, 2017 Francis E. "Doodle" Confer, of Spring Mills, passed from this life Saturday, February 18, 2017, at UPMC Altoona.

He was 92. Born February 7, 1925, in Plankinton, S.D., Doodle was a son of the late Clayton E. and Ellen A. "Auman" Confer. He attended East Penns Valley School. On March 8, 1948, Doodle was united in marriage to June L. McKean who survives at their home in Spring Mills. Doodle proudly served his country during WW II in the U.S. Army Air Corp, now the U.S. Air Force. He received several medals for his service with the 343rd Bomb Squad 98 Bom GP.

Upon his arrival back home, Doodle was employed by Bell Telephone and West Penn Power before moving on to the Pennsylvania Fish Commission where he was employed as a Fish Culturist, retiring in 1984, with 35 years of service. Doodle was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Gregg Township Fire Company and the American Legion Keystone Post #444 in Millheim.

He was a former treasurer of the Spring Mills Fish and Game Association and a former Commander of the Potters Mills VFW Smith Sweetwood Post #9575. Doodle was an avid gardener. He enjoyed hunting, reading about the Civil War and history, watching Penn State and Steeler football, and feeding and watching the birds. He especially enjoyed spending time on the lake fishing with his wife June and son Steve.

In addition to his wife, Doodle is survived by one daughter, Shawna McKean, of Bellefonte; one son, Roy Steve Confer, of Spring Mills; and one grandson, Travis M. Shawver, of Bellefonte. Also surviving is one great grandson, Gabriel M. Shawver, of Bellefonte; and one sister, Violet Confer, of Mackeyville. Doodle was preceded in death by one son, Harry J. Confer; and siblings, Marion Crider, Lena Tremmel, Pauline S. Stover, and Paul F Confer and Glenn D. Confer.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, February 24, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home in Millheim. The funeral will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Chaplain Randy Eckman officiating. Doodle will be laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery in Spring Mills.
