Starting in about 1854, farmed a section of land in Washburn, Cedar Valley, Black Hawk County, Iowa and was successful. Neighboring farms were those of Thomas Doxey and Joseph Mead, his wife's brother. Thomas Doxey's youngest daughter, Della Margaret married his son Cicero Howard in 1886.

He served three terms in the Iowa State legislature representing Black Hawk County. He also served on the Iowa State Board of Agriculture. He died in 1883 on the farm in Washburn while trying to stop a runaway team.
