Notes by her daughter, Stephanie Kauffroth Spencer - April, 2004
Trudy is an Old English name meaning "beloved".
She was born Thelma Mae Croft on Sunday, 1 Nov 1914, in Halsell, Alabama, a milling town in northern Alabama. She weighed less than three pounds. No one thought she would survive but her Aunt Etta saw movement in the tiny baby. Due to her mother's untimely death when she was 14 months old, her Aunt Etta, who she called Wetty, took upon herself to take the child and care for her with much love. Thelma's favorite childhood toys were a gingham dog and a calico cat. She legally changed her name to Trudy on October 13, 1945 in the Probate Court of Mobile County, Alabama, Judge Norvelle R. Leigh, Jr. presiding. Her first marriage was to Robert Paul Turbeville. He was a published poet in South Carolina, a noted political speechwriter and a professor at The Citadel. He was an acquaintance of Pearl S. Buck who wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning, "The Good Earth" which is my all-time favorite book. They lived an affluent lifestyle and traveled in academic, political and established Charleston social circles. She was a professional businesswoman in a time when this was rare. She was a hat-buyer and Millinery Department Manager for Saxon Cullum, Columbia, South Carolina - a high line department store. On one trip to New York, she was approached by someone who wanted her autograph - they had mistaken her for Rosalind Russell - a movie star of the day. In addition, she was a member of the garden club and won ribbons for her flowers. They were childless. She divorced Paul, but re-established a loving relationship with him some years before her death. She met and married Sylvester "Wes" Kauffroth and had two children to whom she devoted her life. She was a loving, enthusiastic parent who put her children first at all times. She was an excellent cook and I remember well her Southern Fried Chicken, Spaghetti with Meat Balls and the best rich, dark chocolate Fudge ever. Trudy & Wes were divorced, but remained supportive of each other all through life. She was a devoted Catholic and taught her children to believe in Jesus Christ and to trust Him for daily needs. They have remained faithful to this teaching. Trudy was a long-time resident of Mobile, Alabama and considered that her home. She moved to Texas in 1984 to be near her daughter, Stephanie, after being hospitalized for one month because of ill health (emphysema). She died on 29 Dec 1986 at 5:55 PM in St. Lukes Hospital, Houston, Harris, Texas. She was buried 2 Jan 1987 at Morton Cemetery in Richmond, Texas, Space #3, Lot 208, Section 2. Funeral arrangements were handled by Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors. She received after death in the Church of Jesus Christ of The Latter Day Saints three separate sets of ordinances. I had submitted her record to Salt Lake on 27 Jan 1991 and became concerned of the length of time it was taking. So I filled out the paperwork again on and put it in the outgoing mail slot on 16 Apr 1992. I then checked my mail for the day and, lo and behold, Salt Lake had written to advise me of the ordinance work. The very same day I mailed Salt Lake again was the day I received an answer!
