Sanford Joshua Butler was the son of Margaret E "Maggie" Adams and Albert "Abb" Pierce Butler. He was born in Pickens County, Alabama on January 26, 1891 and named after his grandfather Sanford Adams and great grandfather Joshua M. Adams and his uncle Josh Adams.

In 1891 when Sanford was an infant his father Abb abandoned his wife Maggie for several days and while he was away Maggie died of the yellow fever at the age of 19. After her death Abb gave up Sanford to his grandparents, Sanford and Nancy Adams, and moved away to west Texas. A few years later in 1893 the whole family, including Sanford and his grandparents and uncles, moved to Richmond, Texas for better opportunities. After Sanford's grandfather passed in 1896, Sanford lived with his grandmother Nancy and his grown uncles Josh, Jenks, and Lewis. When grandmother Nancy passes away in 1906, Sanford, now 15, lived with his uncle Josh Adams and his aunt Jennie in the family house on N. Second Street in Richmond.

In 1917 as a young man Sanford began working in the oil fields for The Texas Company. He worked in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and perhaps other countries. Sanford registered for the WWI draft while in Tampico, Mexico and served in Europe as a private in the 320th Repair Unit of the Motor Transport Corps. After the war he returned to work in the oil patch and again worked in Mexico. In a 1919 passport application Sanford wrote that his father was deceased although he was not.

In his travels Sanford used Richmond as his home address and when he came back to Richmond periodically he lived with his uncle Josh and aunt Jennie and his cousins in that big house on N. Second St.

In the early 1930s Sanford retired from the oil field and married Willie Henderson Stewart of Richmond, Texas. Also about this time Sanford became the superintendent of the Richmond Water Dept. and bought the house across the street from his uncle Josh's house on N. Second, St. Sanford and Willie had two sons: Charles in 1934 and William in 1936. William was disabled at birth and died in his 30s. Sanford lived the rest of his life in Richmond in the house he bought those years ago.

Sanford passed away on May 16, 1966 in the Veterans Hospital in Houston of heart disease and was buried in Morton Cemetery, Richmond, Texas.
