On May 14, 1967, United States Border Patrol Inspector (Trainee) Richard A. Lugo
and Patrol Inspector (Trainee) Bruce A. Plaskett were assigned to maintain sign
cutting drag strips and deliver tire drags to selected sites. They were en route
from their official station, Yuma, Arizona, to Andrade, California, when the
right rear tire suddenly deflated causing a loss of control overturning the
vehicle. Trainee Lugo was crushed and killed instantly.
