Luther Ernest Sliger
COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Luther Ernest Sliger, 90, of Cookeville, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, and from 7 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Sliger died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, in Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 16, 1919, in Silver Point to the late James Luther and Mary Ann Harris Sliger.
Mr. Sliger was an electrician. He was a Master Sergeant in the Army and was a member of Holladay Church of Christ.
His family includes two sons and a daughter-in-law, Luther W. and Virginia Sliger of Gainesboro and Richard C. Sliger of Cookeville; a daughter and son-in-law, Lou Ann and Alex Carter of Hendersonville; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jo Sliger; his second wife, Edith Lorene Sliger; five brothers, Sam, Herbert, Hobert, Willis and Willard Sliger; and two sisters, Beulah Vickers and Bonnie Sliger.
Pallbearers will be the Veterans Honor Guard.
Bros. Johnny Fox and Denton Ramsey will officiate at the services.

Veteran of the Week: U. S. Army Master Sgt. Luther Ernest Sliger, represented by his children, Richard Sliger, Lou Ann Carter and Wayne Sliger, is the Herald Citizen Veteran of the Week. Luther was born in Silver Point December 16, 1919, and volunteered for service in World War II in September of 1939. He was a construction foreman and served in New Guinea, the southern Philippines and Luzon. Married to the late Betty Jo Sliger, Luther received a Bronze Star and was discharged in December of 1945.
