The son of John Wesley & Sarah Purdon (Beauchamp) Smith, he was a graduate of Moravian College in Bethlehem, Northumberland County. He arrived in York in 1861 to pastor the Moravian Church and did so until 1866. While there, he married Emma Rebecca Fahs April 9, 1862, fathering Charles Elmer (b. 01/16/63), Stephen Fahs (b. 09/10/64), Beauchamp Harvey (b. 09/21/69), Sarah Elizabeth Purdon (b. 09/12/72), Susan Ellen (b. 09/14/76), and Mary Delia (b. 11/18/78).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 3, 1864, assigned as chaplain of the 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with the regiment May 30, 1865.

After the war, he invented a washing machine and entered the world of manufacturing, a product that led to the founding of the S. Morgan Smith Co., a once premier manufacturing concern in industralized York. He died of a heart attack while on a visit to California.
