After the war, Isham entered public life, serving two terms as sheriff, two terms as a Representative and two terms in the State Assembly.



Isham married Nancy Jane Murphy on August 21, 1843, at Adair County, Missouri. They had the following known children:

3) Mary Jane "Mollie" (Dodson) Smith

4) Sarah Marguerite "Sallie" (Dodson) Tufts

5) Frances Josephine "Fannie" (Dodson) Tufts

8) William Sherman Dodson

9) Bently Sheridan Dodson

10) Effie Altora Corraine (Dodson) Blunt

ISOM B. DODSON.—Born in Wayne County, Indiana, December 7, 1818; died in Kirksville in 1879. He came to Adair County in 1841, and soon rose to prominence. He was sheriff from 1847 to 1851, and State Senator at the time of the passing of the Drake Constitution. He was major of the Eighteenth Missouri Cavalry. He was survived by his wife, who was Miss Nancy Murphy, and their two [sic] children.
