Meda W. Carez Cookson Gundlach

Meda W. Carez Cookson Gundlach born May 5, 1914, in Junction City, Kansas, died peacefully at home with family by her side, January 24, 2005, in Eureka, CA, at the age of 90.

Meda had four sisters and one brother. She was the last surviving child of Henry and Margaret Carez.

She met her first husband, Albert W. Cookson in high school. He was her basketball coach. They had three children; Charles W. Cookson, Larry L. Cookson, and Mary M. Cookson Ferreira. They came to California in 1954 to live in Glendora, Pismo Beach, and Santa Maria. They then moved to Humboldt County in 1965 due to the winter flood that year. Albert worked with the Corps of Engineers.

Meda loved to work in her gardens. She was a great seamstress. She loved to be with her family and play with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved fishing, camping and dressing up to go to the Eureka Senior Center for lunch.

Meda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert W. Cookson; her second husband, Keith C. Gundlach; her son, Charles W. Cookson; and infant granddaughter, Mary M. Ferreira.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ferreira and her husband Manuel; son, Larry Cookson and his wife Virginia; her daughter-in-law, Virginia Cookson Wroot of Arapaho, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a visitation January 31, 2005, from 9-11 a.m. at Sanders Funeral Home, 1835 E Street, Eureka.

Services will be Monday, January 31, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Oceanview Cemetery Chapel, Eureka, CA, Pastor Dianne Noyes, officiating.

The family would like to thank Dr. Miller, all at Hospice, a special thank you to Marian RN at Hospice and a very special Thank You to caregiver, Lupe, whose care to Meda and family was so very special.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Humboldt or the Eureka Senior Center Lunch Program.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Ferns-Sanders Funeral Home.
