Born and raised in Augusta, GA, Maria completed her education in New York City, graduating from Mrs. Sylvanus Reed's school in 1872. One of the visiting lecturers she enjoyed was Mrs. Ann Leonowens, "Anna" of Anna and the King of Siam. These women were aware of the need for human rights and women's suffrage 150 years ago.
Her husband Robert was in the refrigeration business in it's infancy, and it took them and their seven children to New Orleans. They raised their children there and remained for the rest of their lives, living at 1313 Eighth St. in the Garden District. Their daughter Anne "Nancy" lived there until her death in 1959. The home still stands there and is on the National Register of Historic Places, with the name of The George Washington Cable House.
