Orson Pratt Sutherland was born to David and Jane Menzies Sutherland in New York, N.Y. on October 8, 1841.

His parents joined the Mormon Lyman Wight Colony that went to Texas. Both of Orson's parents died on the overland trip to Texas. Orson was raised by his older sister, Jeanette Chipman.

Orson was a veteran of the Civil War having enlisted in a Texas infantry company at the outbreak of the war.

He was married to Armenia Bird on November 2, 1865 in Bandera, Texas moving with his bride the next year to Galesburg, Missouri, then to Oronogo and finally settled in Webb City, Missouri.

He was a pastor of the Church of Latter Day Saints for many years and was vice president of the Spring River District of the church for a number of years.

He was survived by his wife of Webb City and one son from Miami, FL.; twin daughters, Hattie King, Tulsa, OK and Hettie Sutherland of Webb City. Four other daughters and one son preceded him in death.

Orson is buried in the Webb City Cemetery, Webb City, Missouri.
