Jacob "Jake" Newell was the youngest child of Robert Edward and Mary Masters Newell. He had 4 brothers and 4 sisters. The Newell boys were a lively bunch when they were young. Fun seemed to always follow them. They were not above creating mischief if the situation was right for it.

Jacob's father was a strong supporter of education. His mother did not believe a school education was necessary. When Jake's father was away on lumber business, his mother would not make the children attend school.

The family lived on a 50 acre farm that had been a wedding present to Jake's parents from his paternal grandmother, Susan Stovall Newell. The farm was in Miller County, Missouri. The family raised oats, wheat, beans, hay and corn. They also had an orchard where they raised grapes, peaches, apples and plums.

Jake and his brothers John and Roy had moved to the Illinois area to work in the mines. On December 22, 1935, Jake was married to Jeanette Viola Dossett in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. They had six sons and one daughter.

On February 17, 1970, Jake died of heart failure due to major burns he had received from a mine explosion that occurred while he was working. His brother Roy had died in the Orient #2 mine tragedy. Jake was 58 at the time of his death.
