Samuel T. Alton served as a Private in Company B of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War.

He was wounded in the middle third of his left thigh on July 3, 1863, the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

He died on July 19 at the XII Corps hospital.

He was from Salem, Massachusetts, and his occupation was listed as a "cabinet maker."

He was 21 years of age at the time of his enlistment.

An inkstand, a cross, keys, and other articles were found on this soldier's body.

He was buried under the name of "Samuel Ault," which was thought to be his true identity at the time.

NOTE: This burial was originally recorded as an "unknown," and may be interred in the Massachusetts Plot as an "unknown," or possibly in the "Unknown" Section, under a square marker with only a number on it.
