Actress. She starred in several films in the silent era (The Goose Woman, The Eagle [with Valentino]) and was nominated for an Academy Award, was also in Vaudeville, and later reprised her role as 'Catherine the Great' in Josef von Sternberg's film "The Scarlet Empress" (1934), with Marlene Dietrich.
