On the 1870 Riverheads, Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found farmer Benjamin McNutt, 40; farmer Robert McNutt, 46 and MARY A S McNutt, 80 plus the servant and laborers of the Simon Alexander family and 2 Walkers, all Virginia born.
About 3 years before she died, Robert McNutt, 47, born in Augusta Co., son of J and M A S McNutt, married Virg E Gully, 37, born in Madison Co., daughter of W and E Gully on 20 Dec 1871 in Rockbridge Co., Virginia (FS).

Her daughter Mary's obit mentions her mother's father: BROWN - Departed this life in Augusta county, Va., Feb. 5th, Mrs. Mary S. Brown, wife of the Rev. Henry Brown, in the 65th year of her age. Her father was James McNutt, long a justice of the Peace in Augusta county, and a ruling elder in the congregation of New Providence. Her mother was Mary A. S. Morton, a daughter of that admirable old Christian gentlemen and patriot, Major James Morton, of Wilmington, Prince Edward county, Va., and on account of unswerving fidelity in the times of the Revolution, well known under the soubriquet of "Old Solid Column."
